The people of Bird-in-Hand announce the 15th annual Lancaster County Carriage & Antique Auction to be held on Thursday evening and all day Friday, June 26 & 27, 2014 in the center of their town. An Early Bird Auction officially starts the events at 5:30 pm on Thursday and a full day of activities on Friday from 8 am to 6 pm rounds out this significant fundraiser for the Bird-in-Hand Volunteer Fire Company.
The Fire Company members and community will join together in a renewed spirit of camaraderie to prepare the auction grounds, gather consignment items, and serve country-style foods. Despite last year's stormy weather, most of the memories from the 2013 auction are good. From raising a huge tent in the middle of the night to spreading mounds of sawdust over muddy terrain, the community pulled together so that the auction could go on.
Organizer Jake King summarized the 2013 auction this way, "The community effort was awesome. Even though the profits were down because of extra expenses, the event was still successful. The success came in the way the community people joined together to do whatever it took to solve the problems caused by the weather. Attitudes were great - no complaints or long faces. The weather brought out the best in people."
Along with community spirit, the auction has grown from a small sale held on the day of a carriage makers' reunion to a large event with 4,500 attendees and 1,300 bidders. Now 15 years later, the auction has expanded to include handmade crafts, quilts, shrubs, flowers, nursery items, equestrian items (harness, tack, carriage appointments and horse-related items), miniature horses, carriages, and a wide array of antiques and furniture.
The auction is great fun for families. It offers delicious fresh and local foods, a horse-drawn shuttle wagon, eight auctioneers circulating among the auction blocks, rows and rows of antiques, and many specialty carriages while supporting the worthy cause of quality fire protection for the Bird-in-Hand area.
